A Breakthrough in Database Technology

A technology breakthrough in database software announced today could shake up the software industry and make high-powered data analysis tools available to companies that haven’t been able to afford them.

The technology, called the VectorWise project, is a collaboration between the American software company Ingres Corp.; CWI of Amsterdam, Netherlands, a government-supported research institute; and VectorWise, a spinout from the institute. The partners claim the technology produces database performance improvements ranging from 10-fold to 80-fold, compared to conventional database technology, depending on the tasks it’s performing.

Ingres, an open-source software company based in Redwood City, Calif., hopes to have commercial products based on the VectorWise technology in the market by early next year. “This proves that the open source approach is not just about cost reduction. It’s also about innovation,” says Roger Burkhardt, the chief executive of Ingres. “A small company is leapfrogging the giants of the industry. How do we do it? It’s because of the open source innovation model.”

Under the open source model, hundreds and sometimes thousands of people contribute software code to a project.in exchange for the right to use the program royalty free. Companies like Ingres package open source programs and sell subscription-based services around them.

Databases are crucial components of corporate computing, providing the data storage, retrieval, and analysis capabilities that companies need to do everything from managing their financial accounts to tracking sales and orders. The database software industry is dominated by giants including Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft—but a handful of open source companies, including Ingres, are building businesses around the edges of the industry. Typically, they offer basic database capabilities at significantly lower costs. VectorWise has the potential to be the first major technology advance to come from the open source end of the industry. “This is definitely a breakthrough,” says Noel Yuhanna, an analyst at Forrester Research. “It delivers faster results at lower costs. It will help a lot of customers who traditionally couldn’t afford big servers so they can crunch data.”

Yuhanna cautions that it’s too early to tell what impact VectorWise will have on the industry. The technology has to be turned into a product, and Ingres has to convince large corporations to try it and, if they like it, switch from their current database providers. He says it’s more likely that, ultimately, a larger company will buy Ingres and take the technology to market.

VectorWise improves database software so it can take fuller advantage of the latest advances in microprocessors. One key element is a data query engine that takes advantage of the fact that modern microprocessors are made up of multiple components, or cores, that can process pieces of data in parallel. Another element stores data on memory caches that are attached to the processors, so the information can be retrieved and acted on in milliseconds. A third advance makes it possible for a computer to digest larger chunks of data at a time. Chip giant Intel Corp. has run tests on several of its microprocessors to validate the technology’s performance.

Ingres transplanted the VectorWise technology into its existing database software package and is fleshing it out with a set of tools designed to help corporate programmers use the new technology. Burkhardt claims that the technology allows business people to analyze hundreds of millions of rows of data on a $5,000 computer and get answers in a couple of seconds. In a traditional situation, a company might expect to have to use $150,000 in computing gear to get the same output.

The core innovations in VectorWise are the work, primarily, of two CWI researchers, Peter Boncz and Marcin Zukowski. They set out to produce a 100-fold improvement in database performance. Ingres engineers 18 months ago came upon their research, called the X100 Project. Says Burkhardt: “We saw we could collaborate with them to take an academic project and make it commercial.”

Improving Business Value at Ripley Entertainment by Solving IT SharePoint Challenges

TAMPA, Fla., November 10, 2009. Ripley Entertainment contracted with Dobler Consulting in July, 2009 to use his IT Solutions Architect expertise for their new company-wide Intranet portal. They needed an Intranet facelift to match the look, feel, and versatility of their external website, while using existing Microsoft SharePoint® technology.

The major challenge for Peter Dobler was to find a better way to create global collaboration for Ripley’s employees. The company has 74 locations in 13 countries. For the collaboration challenge, Dobler says “Microsoft SharePoint® is an excellent technology, but not attractive or simple for end users to use. It is not a technology that can easily turn a website into a friendly working space.” Dobler worked with Ripley’s Marketing Department, who created the look and feel of the Intranet design.

The original SharePoint® portal workflows were used infrequently. Dobler added these workflows to the new website design, making certain they were quick to find and utilize. He included menus, reporting, an integrated discussion forum, and attractive screens for employees to collect/share information, and work together on global projects from all locations. The upgraded system enabled employees to raise their work performance exponentially. Team efficiency and productivity improved rapidly.

The new system architecture provided additional benefits for data protection and security. Data security challenges were solved through careful planning to ensure no breaches would occur. Dobler used the built-in security capabilities of SharePoint®, and added custom data security measures to protect valuable business data that met Ripley’s standards.

Dobler had eight weeks to update Ripley’s internal site, and implement solutions for their business goals using SharePoint® technology. By the second week of September, Dobler finished the project on-time and within budget. Today, Ripley’s new system uses SharePoint® to its maximum advantage, supports employees collaborating with a wide distribution of data at their fingertips, and maintains data security, aligned with company requirements.

The History of Database Management Systems

With the hot new buzz about data management systems, you would have thought that they are a very recent invention. In fact, that is not true at all. Simple electromagnetic databases have existed even in the earliest electronic computers. In fact, it is hard for any computer to operate without a database infrastructure behind it. In this article, I'll give you the history of database management systems.

If you think about it, database management systems have even existed for thousands of years. However, in the earlier days they were recorded without computers, with crude accounting systems that banks used to use over a 500 years ago.

However, when most people talk about database management systems, they refer to one of an electronic nature. This is where electromagnetic storage of information takes place, is organized and can be recalled later with a set of commands.

At first, database management systems are very crude, as there was always a memory problem with the earlier electronic computers. In fact, Bill Gates was quoted as saying in 1981 that 640K memory ought to be enough for anybody. Ha!

Around the 1960s, the earliest of electromagnetic database storage was used only by those who could afford it, because of its extremely high expense. In fact, whereas today databases are used for research purposes, at this time computers were themselves considered a research project.

It wasn't until the 1970s, when memory was able to be increased and component prices began to decrease, was there any real headway with database management systems. It was at this time that a number of different problems started coming up, as related to information management on the computers. With all these problems surfacing, a solution was needed.

In the 1980 all the major vendors who sold hardware systems started incorporating database management systems into their computers for a systematic solution.

At first, these database management systems were very specific to the computer and to the user. IBM was one of the leaders in this category, but soon many clones and competitors entered into the marketplace, all at varying price points with different and alternative solutions.

With the advent of the 90s, the shift turned from having an accurate database management system, to having one that was easily maintainable. This is because memory capacity started to grow, as well as the creation and spread of information. This is when some of the more sophisticated database management systems at the market.

Currently, the focus is on completely automating most of the database management administration.

This Critical Patch Update Pre-Release Announcement provides advance information about the Oracle Critical Patch Update for April 2007 which will be released on Tuesday, 17 April 2007. While this Pre-Release Announcement is as accurate as possible at the time of publication, the information it contains may change before publication of the Critical Patch Update advisory.

A Critical Patch Update is a collection of patches for multiple security vulnerabilities. It also includes non-security fixes that are required (because of interdependencies) by those security patches. This Critical Patch Update contains 37 security fixes across all products. Some of the vulnerabilities addressed in this Critical Patch Update affect multiple products.

Vulnerabilities fixed by Critical Patch Updates are scored using the standard CVSS scoring (see 394486.1). The highest CVSS base score of vulnerabilities across all products is 7.0.

AMD has released the last iteration of its Catalyst drivers for this year, the Catalyst 9.12. The new pack features support for Radeon HD 2000, 3000, 4000 and of course HD 5000 series of graphics cards and brings a handful of performance improvements and new features.

The new Catalyst 9.12 driver pack comes with v8.681 graphics driver, and features support for DirectCompute 10.1 for the HD 4800 series and HD 4700 series in both single and CrossfireX configurations. Another new feature is support for OpenGL 3.2 extensions for the entire lineup.

As we noted, there is a handful of performance improvements which include 3DMark Vantage of up to 9 percent for ATI Radeon HD 5800 and HD 5700 series as well as small performance improvement in STALKER Call of Pripyat.

Corporate/technical timeline

• 1979: SDL changed its company-name to "Relational Software, Inc." (RSI) and introduced its product Oracle V2 as an early commercially-available relational database system. The version did not support transactions, but implemented the basic SQL functionality of queries and joins. (RSI never released a version 1 - instead calling the first version version 2 as a marketing gimmick.)[17]
• 1982: RSI in its turn changed its name, becoming known as "Oracle Corporation",[18] to align itself more closely with its flagship product.

• 1992: Oracle version 7 appeared with support for referential integrity, stored procedures and triggers.
• 1997: Oracle Corporation released version 8, which supported object-oriented development and multimedia applications.
• 1999: The release of Oracle8i aimed to provide a database inter-operating better with the Internet (the i in the name stands for "Internet"). The Oracle 8i database incorporated a native Java virtual machine (Oracle JVM).
• 2000: Oracle E-Business Suite 11i pioneers integrated enterprise application software[18]
• 2001: Oracle9i went into release with 400 new features, including the ability to read and write XML documents. 9i also provided an option for Oracle RAC, or "Real Application Clusters", a computer-cluster database, as a replacement for the Oracle Parallel Server (OPS) option.
• 2003: Oracle Corporation released Oracle Database 10g. (The g stands for "grid"; emphasizing a marketing thrust of presenting 10g as "grid-computing ready".)

Virtual Private Database (VPD) with Oracle Apps

Virtual Private Database (VPD) is an Oracle database security technology, enabling row level access control.With VPD we are able to control users access to data related to them only and preventing from them to access data they are not authorized to see.For additional information about VPD take a look at Virtual Private Database in Oracle8i and Oracle9i.

VPD can be used with Oracle Applications 11i, and I'm going to show a very simple example.So let's assume, for example purpose only, that we would like to prevent some users to view requests that finished with status "ERROR".

The steps to implement VPD are:
1) Create a profile to control which users can see error requests
2) Set profile value to 'N' at site level.
3) Create new context
4) Create context package
5) Create policy package
6) Add policy to concurrent request table

Physical and logical structuring in Oracle

An Oracle database system comprises at least one instance of the application, along with data storage. An instance comprises a set of operating-system processes and memory-structures that interact with the storage. Typical processes include PMON (the process monitor) and SMON (the system monitor).
Users of Oracle databases refer to the server-side memory-structure as the SGA (System Global Area). The SGA typically holds cache information such as data-buffers, SQL commands and user information. In addition to storage, the database consists of online redo logs (which hold transactional history). Processes can in turn archive the online redo logs into archive logs (offline redo logs), which provide the basis (if necessary) for data recovery and for some forms of data replication.
The Oracle RDBMS stores data logically in the form of tablespaces and physically in the form of data files. Tablespaces can contain various types of memory segments; for example, Data Segments, Index Segments etc. Segments in turn comprise one or more extents. Extents comprise groups of contiguous data blocks. Data blocks form the basic units of data storage. At the physical level, data-files comprise one or more data blocks, where the block size can vary between data-files.
Oracle database management tracks its computer data storage with the help of information stored in the SYSTEM tablespace. The SYSTEM tablespace contains the data dictionary — and often (by default) indexes and clusters. (A data dictionary consists of a special collection of tables that contains information about all user-objects in the database). Since version 8i, the Oracle RDBMS also supports "locally managed" tablespaces which can store space management information in bitmaps in their own headers rather than in the SYSTEM tablespace (as happens with the default "dictionary-managed" tablespaces).
If the Oracle database administrator has instituted Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters), then multiple instances, usually on different servers, attach to a central storage array. This scenario offers numerous advantages, most importantly performance, scalability and redundancy. However, support becomes more complex, and many sites do not use RAC. In version 10g, grid computing has introduced shared resources where an instance can use (for example) CPU resources from another node (computer) in the grid.
The Oracle DBMS can store and execute stored procedures and functions within itself. PL/SQL (Oracle Corporation's proprietary procedural extension to SQL), or the object-oriented language Java can invoke such code objects and/or provide the programming structures for writing them.
